Pretties!

I LOVE boots!

008S04aAs boot season arrives and I don my favorite footwear, I find that I feel different when I’m wearing boots.

As a girl, I always had a pair of snow boots and several pairs of cowboy boots, most of which were in terrible condition! With the exception of rodeos and riding competitions, I usually wore my boots to work.

During summertime and on some weekends, I’d wake up super early, get dressed in jeans and boots, and run downstairs to catch my dad before he left. We’d have breakfast at Roberson’s where I’d get to sit and listen to all the old farmers talk about the weather. Sometimes another kid my age would be there, but I was almost always the only girl!

012S02

Then we’d go out to check on the cattle, and then we’d get to work. I remember watching Sholly (the horse) give birth through binoculars one cold morning. Daddy said that if you get too close to a birthing animal it’ll scare them and cause problems with their labor. I wish someone had told my obstetrician that!

Those days with Daddy taught me how to fire a rifle, repair a barbed-wire fence, pull a splinter out of my hand, and avoid stepping in any mud that looks green (it’s cow poop!). I learned about the danger of falling into bad habits when Daddy taught me to never let my horse eat while I was riding or to run when we head back to the barn. And it was probably on Shotgun’s back in my old boots when I learned that I was stronger than I realized.

003S03aI was out with Daddy one day and we had about a hundred head of cattle that we needed to vaccinate, tag, and brand. Dad was working in the pen and my job was to round up all the cattle an get them in the pen. I couldn’t have been more than 9 or 10 years old at the time. And in a few different trips, I got all of them except one.

That nasty little steer refused to be herded. Every time I approached, he’d charge me! Evil little booger! He didn’t have horns, but I’d dutifully pull my horse away whenever he’d charge; even without horns, a steer can do some serious damage when they charge! So I sat there, trying to find a way to get this steer into the pen. Dad was already working on vaccinations, and I was out there in the Texas heat puzzled by this odd behavior.

Finally, I had had enough! I waited until his back was turned, spurred my horse forward, smacked his rear as hard as I could, and commanded with gritted teeth, “GO!” And he turned around and headed toward the pen.

013S01So this winter, when you see me grinning from ear to ear in my boots, or when you see me squeal with delight about finding an awesome pair, you’ll know why boots excite me so. They remind me of home, of my Daddy, and of the fact that I am more powerful than I realize.

Being beautiful is about more than the right clothes and the right makeup. It’s about knowing in your heart that you are beautiful. I found my power in a pair of boots. Where will you find yours?

Holly’s #LOTW!

Becca isn’t the only one who’s been delaying her blog post, but at least mine won’t be late! That being said, I do apologize for how sparse it is today:

2013Oct02

Some of you may not realize that Frugal Ella is run by two people: Becca is the heart of the company – she’s creative, fun, young, energetic, and exciting! She handles most of the artistic stuff – either doing it herself or finding someone to do it. Holly (me!) is the brain of the company. I’m detail-oriented, obsessive, anal, and boring. But I manage all of our social media stuff (WordPress, Twitter, Facebook, Google+, Instagram, Twitter, & Klout), our website (technical stuff, adding products, etc.), the orders & customer service, and the majority of our buying. Becca sometimes finds cool stuff to add to the shop, but I’m usually the one who tracks down vendors and stuff.

And all of this is to say (again!) that I’m sorry I’ve kind of been neglecting the blog lately. We recently migrated to a new server. And we re-examined all of our vendors and had to get rid of some and replace them. And we’re expanding our product line! Every evening, I try to add three or four new products to our shop, and that’s not as easy as it sounds! And then during the day, I have to take care of a house filled with four rambunctious boys, chase a couple of toddlers around, and homeschool a couple of older boys who just HATE doing their math!

But enough excuses! I do hope that you enjoy this weeks #LOTW!

Sparklies!

Okay! So, me being the diva that I am, I’m late with my blog! (Small scream of horror!) But I promise you ladies, it’s worth the wait because today I found for you 3 amazing little pairs of shoes that can 100% transform any outfit!

Marilyn Monroe is quoted as having say “Give a girl the right pair of shoes and she can take over the world!” Since I wasn’t there I can’t vouch for the source, but we all know the truth of that statement! Shoes make us feel complete, polished, and confident in our new outfit.

One of the fun things to do with a great pair of shoes is to make them the focal point of the whole outfit. We can do this by sneaking detail into the shoe that mirrors detail or design in the rest of our look.

010S01A super-hot celebrity trend right now is to pair floral heels with a flirty little dress or cute top and jeans. Shoes like these give just the tiniest bit of punch to an other wise simple look. The detail pops with every step you take. Echo your flowery feet with a nice floral necklace or scarf and you have an easy way to ensure that your whole outfit will be appreciated, head to toe!

012S01Another really nifty way to play up shoes is with metallic detailing like these fantastic boots have to offer. Remember that eyes are always drawn to the light. You can take even the most simple jean and button down shirt look and class it up instantly with these shoes. Or try pairing them with a pencil skirt and leather jacket for a chic finish. They are also easy on your feet, which as all my heel-loving ladies know, is a major bonus!

Finally I wanted to show you these adorable things! The soft floral pattern on these shoes is romantic, flirty, and just so dang cute it’s irresistible. This can be matched with any pastel party dress or light toned trouser for a young and fresh look. Even in fall and winter, there is always space for a light floral touch.

011S01

The best thing about using floral heels and other details in your shoes is that it gives even the most conservative lady a way to express her personality!

That’s all I have today folks! See you next week! Love you!

I am so excited about my Look of the Week this week! This is one of the first weeks that I’ve had enough stuff in our website catalog to flesh out the majority of a new look!

My thoughts this week have turned to fall, as it’s been pouring buckets up here in the Puget Sound! That’s a sure sign that winter’s around the corner!

Holly’s Pretties!

I remember when I was a little girl, my mom used to tell me, “You always have to be contrary! You just do the opposite of what you’re supposed to do!” And I remember thinking at the time that she was wrong. And then I had a daughter of my own, and I had a new sympathy for my poor mother! 🙂

But maybe she was right, and I always have been contrary. Because when I see these constant pictures of “menswear-inspired” and “menswear fabrics” fashion, I hate it. I really do. I know, I’m supposed to be all fashion-forward and stuff, but I just pray this menswear thing runs its course quickly.

Ralph Lauren

I don’t WANT to dress like a man! I want to dress like a woman! I want clothes that fit my figure in fabrics that flatter my body! I want my clothes to make me feel beautiful and feminine!

And perhaps the most egregious example of my backwards thinking is my absolute addiction to all things “girly” these days! I want something that’s pretty and feminine, but not something that’s too juvenile. I am, after all, a woman! So I like feminine accents: a hint of lace at the top of a camisole, or a cute little ruffle on a pair of boots.

With that in mind, I present to you my Pretties for this week!

008S03a

008S01a

005O02dSo I’m begging you, fashion designers, to take a stand and be different. Manolo Blahnik has famously refused to ever again make platforms, despite the current trends toward platforms on everything! He says, “‘I hate platforms. The young girl who is a bit chubby, or whatever, she thinks platforms make her look taller. But no, they just make her look weird.”

Well, I say that there aren’t many women who look fabulous in menswear-inspired designs (especially some of the shapeless, bland, dull looks we saw at Fashion Week New York!). So I for one would like to see more designs that make women look and feel beautiful!

Do you agree? Or do you think I’m over-reacting?

Pretties!

For some reason, I’ve been thinking a lot about accessories this week, especially about shiny, sparkly, pretty accessories like jewelry!

I once had a beautiful emerald ring that was given to me by my mother. After the fire, it wasn’t where it should’ve been, and I can’t remember whether I gave it to mom for safekeeping or whether it was with me (and thus is now lost). Either way, I positively ADORED that ring!

Traditionally, emeralds are sacred to Aphrodite/Venus, goddess of love and beauty. Rings are historically considered a “binding” piece of jewelry. So old wives’ tales say that wearing an emerald ring places a “glamour” on a woman – makes her beautiful and lovely.

I don’t know if that’s entirely true, but I’ve been looking at emerald rings lately and missing the one I lost. And I’ve been looking at the PRICES of new emerald rings and despairing!

But I’ve found a way to get a pretty emerald ring without paying a premium price.

Let’s start at the top:

This ring is beautiful! It actually reminds me a lot of the ring I used to have. I love using an emerald cut on emeralds; it just seems to fit in my mind! My old ring was gold instead of silver, but there’s a lot of similarity here. What I DON’T like about it is the price! The regular price is $1,559, although it is on sale for $599, so it’s a great deal for what it is. It’s 14K white gold and over 2 carats of total gem weight. Clarity and quality on the emerald and the (real!) diamonds is amazing! So if you want a top-quality emerald ring, this is a great option.

Stepping down just a hair but keeping the design similar, we find this beautiful ring. The stones are smaller (0.65 carat total gem weight) and it’s made of 10K white gold instead of 14K. The clarity and quality on the stones is also a bit lower, but at $399, it’s a good money-saving option that still gives you the look of the more expensive ring.

Finally, this ring is an excellent budget option, and it looks phenomenal! So what makes this such a great deal? First, it’s 925 Sterling Silver instead of gold. Second, it uses white sapphires rather than diamonds. And third, it uses a lab-created emerald instead of a naturally-occurring one. This ring is only $71, so it’s much more affordable than the other two options.

So what does this mean? Only that all fashion purchases require balancing quality and price. If you want an investment piece, you’ll obviously be looking for real gold (and lots of it!) and real diamonds of the highest quality. But if you want a beautiful ring, you can often find it much more affordably if you’re willing to make a few compromises.
